National Technical Systems Completes Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Survey on Nuclear Power Station for Energy Northwest

Calabasas, CA – August 2, 2005 - National Technical Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: NTSC) (NTS), a leading provider of quality and conformance testing and managed services, announces  that it has completed an EMI survey and mapping at Energy Northwest’s Columbia Generating Station, an 1157 megawatt boiling water reactor located in Richland, Washington. According to NTS Vice President of Marketing, Derek Coppinger, the onsite assessment program was valued at approximately $200,000 and was conducted by the NTS Power Products Group. Energy Northwest is a municipal corporation formed under Washington state law. It operates as a joint operating agency to serve the collective interests of its 19 member utilities throughout the state. It owns and operates nuclear, hydroelectric, wind, and solar power generation facilities.

NTS performed the survey to establish a site base line for future plant digital modifications and to assess the possible use of wireless communications in the plant’s control room. Over 500 EMI E-field and magnetic field emission measurements and power line conducted-emission measurements were taken in the control room, reactor building, diesel generator, Rad-waste and turbine buildings. The NTS technical team combined experienced personnel from NTS’ east and west coast operations.

The radiated E-field measurements were performed over the frequency range of 10 KHz to 10 GHz using the guidelines of MIL-Std-461E method RE102 as modified by EPRI TR 102323, Rev 2.  Magnetic field measurements were performed from 30 Hz to 100 KHz using the guidelines of MIL-Std-461E method RE101 as modified by EPRI TR 102323, Rev 2.  Power line emissions were performed using the guidelines of MIL-Std-461E method CE101. In parallel with the field measurements, data was transmitted daily back to NTS Acton and NTS Boxborough for review and analysis in order to meet the tight delivery date for the final report.

“We can provide on-site conformity assessment, testing and services in many disciplines,” notes Steve Eisenberg, Project Manager. “From precision cleaning of satellite components to engineering wireless systems for process control, NTS can contribute expertise to our customers’ programs.”
